A lot of professors give talks titled "The Last Lecture." Professors are asked to consider their demise and to ruminate on what matters most to them. And while they speak, audiences can't help but mull the same question: we impart to the world if we knew it was our last chance? If we had to vanish tomorrow, what would we want as our legacy?
鮑許教授所秉持的理念,就是“Brick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly* we want things.”
因為,“Be prepared:‘luck’ is where preparation meets opportunity.”
this book is more or less a monologue of a terminally ill cancer patient. he wanted to live but he will soon die. he wanted to leave some legacy but his time is so limited. but overall he wanted to give his life a novelty finale. So he gave a lecture, or a retrospect about his life, the LAST LECTURE
it's a string of stories and from each he was trying to put across a point. a point that looks totally commonplace but in the prospect of a looming death, every point became so different.
I read this book on and off during the trip, until on the plane back home, i finished it. and i was utterly stunned...not by the stories, but by the sudden blank, absolutely BLANK pages at the end...the book, all the stories, thoughts flows to a abrupt halt here...Randy, til this moment, I have to say, you drove it all home.
I don't want to say, I learned a lot from this book. because lots of the lessons are personal. it may not apply in my life. but one thing, one point, strikes sound and loud:
life is a suitcase, we travel with it and we pack various things into it. Let's pack as much love, gratitude, fun, meaningful stories and as little complaint, regret, hatred, and wasted days.
Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.
他说,Wait long enough and people will surprise and impress you.
他说,If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself. The dreams will come to you.
他说,The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out; the brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something.
比如他说到自己参加足球队的梦想,他说虽然最终没能实现,可这却教会了我们一个很重要的道理,“Experience is what you get when you didn't what you wanted!”。

When professor Randy Pausch was giving the final last lecture at Carnegie Mellon University, he referred 'elephant' as the 10 tumors in his liver; to me and people like me who are inspired by his speeches, he is definitely an elephant on the planet.
I read the book within 2 days; actually, 3.5-4 hours spread over 2 days. It was a delightful reading experience-there weren't complicated or fancy words that impede me to move on; nor there were enough clichés to make me bored(although the author insisted he talked clichés over and over again).
I was struck by Randy's optimism. Knowing that he had 3-6 months to live, like a solider with high morale, he fought for every possibility to be alive, both physically and mentally. He had a romantic getaway with his wife, he took his children to do something they longed for, he visited family members and friends with a having-fun theme without talking about cancer, he presented last lecture series on stage inspiring millions of people.
A big chunk of this book is on childhood dreams. Randy always had passion about his dreams, he committed to work hard, never gave up on finding them, even when he was in denial. I have given up most of my childhood dreams, and to comfort myself, I honored myself with the sign of getting mature to be realistic and sophisticated to know how to compromise. I gave them up naturally, without a second thought. I didn't try to reach out for the stars. To be self-reflective(as mentioned by Randy), I question myself for not pushing my limits. Why dare not to dream anymore? Why being afraid while confronting those obstacles? I don't wanna be cowered. No more.
Another point worth mentioning is do not stop in front of brick walls. When Randy was trying to get a job at Disney on his sabbatical leave, he was not offered the job at the first place; when Randy was applying for graduate study at Carnegie Mellon, he was not accepted initially; when Randy fell in love with Jai and proposed to her, she didn't want to make a bold move to marry that man and live in another city happily after....Those "Berlin Walls" were broken down, falling into pieces, either with Randy's persistence, or help of others who appreciate this kind of determination.
There are tons of small advices mentioned(near the end of this book), simple yet persuasive.

My childhood dreams
Enabling the dreams of others
Lessons learned: how you can achieve your dreams or enable the dreams of others
Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you want.
How to know “head fake”.
Brick walls are there for a reason: they let us prove how badly we want things. Brick walls let us show our dedication.
Decide if you’re Tiger or Eeyore.
Never lose the child-like wonder.
Loyalty is a two-way street.
This talk is not for you guys, but for my children.
梦想,不会太容易,但既然你想就要去做,而且要努力去做;
人生,不会太艰难,如果你好好活,就会善有善报;
I will fix it!
